Week 4 Internship Diary: Feb. 24 – 28

Week 4 was dedicated to interviews, ads, and web page design. My supervisor, Mr. Sikes, was still on travel on Monday, but he returned on Tuesday. On Monday, I began taking notes on Steve Sheinkin’s book “The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and The Fight for Civil Rights” and continued to work on the sample questions for Steve Sheinkin and the U.S. Navy. On Tuesday, Mr. Sikes returned; before reporting to him, I interviewed Rev. Diana McDaniel, the President of the Friends of Port Chicago National Memorial, on “Why did it take the U.S. Navy 80 years to exonerate the Port Chicago 50?”

When I reported to my supervisor, I gave him updates, such as a meet & greet being scheduled with Yuli Padmore, the executive director of Port Chicago Alliance, and the first draft of the ads being completed. We ended the week by reviewing the feedback I received for the ads and ways to improve the ad’s formatting and verbiage. He suggested creating a webpage for our website on our efforts to find descendants of the POCH 50. The webpage will include the purpose of our efforts and a form that will help us keep track of the number of descendants.
