
Howard University’s Founders Library was created in 1939 by Congress.
The library includes a variety of books, plus artifacts dating back to the 1900s.
According to the university’s website, the collection was previously “housed in the Carnegie Library, also located on the main campus.”
“Opened in 1910, the Carnegie Library allowed for the expansion of the library collection.”
Founder’s Library has a variety of books that celebrates Black creators, including collections belonging to authors Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, and much more.
According to Howard University’s libraries, “the importance of the structure was recognized 73 years later, when in 2012 the Founders Library was named a “national treasure” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.”
The library is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, and times vary on the weekend.
